Does Walmart accept coupons? Yes. Walmart's US stores accept paper and print-at-home manufacturer coupons that scan, are in date and match the item you're buying. But Walmart doesn't scan digital coupons from your phone at the till, doesn't take competitor coupons, doesn't double or triple coupons and doesn't pay out overage. Its digital savings work differently, through Walmart Cash offers you claim in the app, and online discounts come mainly from Marketplace seller promo codes.

What is Walmart's coupon policy?

Walmart publishes its coupon policy on its corporate policies page. It applies to purchases in Walmart stores. The core rule is simple: Walmart accepts manufacturer coupons with a scannable GS1 barcode that are presented at checkout, are within their valid dates and match the product you're buying.

A manufacturer coupon is issued by the brand (for example, a cereal or detergent maker), not by Walmart. The brand reimburses the store for the discount. That's why Walmart is strict about barcodes and validity: if a coupon is fake or doesn't match, the store may not be paid back. Walmart's policy says coupons are validated against the Positive Offer File, an industry database used to confirm that a coupon is genuine and live. Walmart doesn't issue its own paper store coupons in the way some US supermarkets do. Its own savings come through everyday low prices, Rollbacks, clearance and Walmart Cash.

Which coupons does Walmart accept?

Here's how the main coupon types are treated in store, according to Walmart's policy:

Paper vs digital manufacturer coupons at Walmart

This is where most confusion comes from. Other US grocers let you "load" digital coupons to a loyalty card that come off automatically at the till. Walmart doesn't work that way.

Paper manufacturer coupons

Coupons from newspaper inserts, mailers, product packaging and in-store tear pads are the classic Walmart coupon. Hand them to the cashier (or scan them at self-checkout if the machine accepts coupons, otherwise call for help). Each one must match the brand, size and variety printed on it.

Printable internet coupons

Coupons you print from a manufacturer's site or a legitimate coupon site are accepted, as long as they scan. Walmart can refuse them if they're blurry, resized, altered or photocopied. Print at 100% scale on a decent printer, and don't print more copies than the site allows.

Digital coupons and the Walmart app

Walmart won't scan a coupon barcode displayed on your phone. Instead, the app offers manufacturer deals as Walmart Cash: you claim the offer, buy the item, and the saving arrives as a balance for later rather than coming off at the till. Beware of coupon sellers

The Coupon Information Corporation, an industry anti-fraud body, warns shoppers to never pay money for coupons because they may be counterfeit or stolen. A counterfeit coupon won't validate at Walmart and could cause problems at the till.

Walmart coupon limits and rules

One coupon per item

Walmart accepts one paper manufacturer coupon per item for in-store purchases. You can't put two manufacturer coupons on the same bottle of shampoo, even if they're from different sources.

Four identical coupons per household, per day

The policy limits you to 4 identical coupons per household, per day, unless the coupon says otherwise. There's no limit on how many different coupons you use in one transaction, so a trip with twenty different coupons is fine.

Reasonable quantities

Walmart reserves the right to limit purchases to typical retail quantities (with an exception noted for New Mexico). Clearing a shelf with coupons is likely to be challenged.

No overage

If a coupon is worth more than the item's price, Walmart applies it only up to the item price. The excess isn't applied to the rest of your basket and you don't get cash back. The policy says this includes WIC and SNAP transactions.

No doubling or tripling

Walmart doesn't honour double or triple coupons. A $1 coupon is worth $1.

BOGO coupons

For a buy-one-get-one manufacturer coupon, you need to buy both items. One is charged at full price and the second is discounted or free. You can't use two BOGO coupons on two items to get both free, and percentage-based BOGO coupons aren't accepted.

Returns

If you return an item you bought with a manufacturer coupon, the coupon's value isn't refunded to you, and the coupon isn't given back. You'll get what you actually paid.

Store management has the final say

The policy states that store management has the final decision in taking care of the customer. That cuts both ways: a manager can refuse a doubtful coupon, but can also sort out a valid one a cashier is unsure about.

How Walmart Cash works

Walmart Cash is Walmart's replacement for load-to-card digital coupons. It behaves more like cashback than a coupon.

1. Find an offer. Online or in the app, look for "Get Walmart Cash" on a product page and tick the box to claim it. In store, scan a product barcode with the app to see and claim any offer.
2. Buy the item. Online, check out as normal. In store, scan the QR code at the till (or use Walmart Pay or Scan & Go) to link the purchase to your account.
3. Forgot to link it? If you claimed an offer but didn't use Walmart Pay or Scan & Go, you can scan your store receipt in the app.
4. Wait for fulfilment. Walmart Cash is added once the order is fulfilled. It isn't added if the item is substituted or returned.
5. Spend it. Apply your balance at checkout online, or in store after scanning the QR code.

Cashing out and returns

Walmart says you can cash out once you have at least $25: choose "Cash out in store" in your account and show the barcode at a MoneyCenter or customer service desk with ID matching your account name. If you return an item you earned Walmart Cash on, that amount is taken off your balance, which can go negative. Future earnings fill the gap first, but Walmart says it won't ask you to repay a negative balance. Items bought with Walmart Cash are refunded to your balance, usually within 24 hours.

Can you stack coupons at Walmart?

You can't stack two manufacturer coupons on one item, but you can combine different types of saving:

Rollback vs clearance: what's the difference?

A Rollback is a temporary price reduction Walmart runs on selected items, usually for weeks at a time. Clearance is a markdown to clear stock, and prices may drop further until the item is gone. Both are Walmart's own price cuts, so a manufacturer coupon can usually be used on top. Just remember that overage isn't paid, so a coupon bigger than a heavily reduced clearance price is only worth the item's price.

Does Walmart accept coupons online?

The paper coupon policy covers in-store purchases, so don't expect to use paper coupons on Walmart.com or on online pickup and delivery orders. Online, your options are Walmart Cash offers and Marketplace seller promo codes.

Walmart's seller promo code terms say:

• some Marketplace sellers offer promo codes on select items;
• you should check the "Sold by" box on the product page matches the seller running the offer;
• you can enter up to five unique promo codes per transaction, in the promo code field at checkout;
• unless stated otherwise, codes can't be combined with other offers;
• offers are limited-time and can end without notice;
• if you return a qualifying item, the discount is deducted from your refund.

Does Walmart price match?

Only in a limited way. Walmart's price match policy (last updated 8 June 2023) says stores will match the price of an identical item that's in stock and available on Walmart.com, if you tell the associate at checkout.

How to use coupons at Walmart: step by step

1. Make a list first. Plan what you need, then look for coupons that match. Buying something just because you have a coupon rarely saves money.
2. Gather coupons. Clip from inserts and mailers, and print from legitimate manufacturer sites.
3. Check the Walmart app. Claim any Walmart Cash offers on items on your list.
4. Match carefully in store. Check brand, size, variety and quantity against each coupon's wording.
5. Keep within limits. No more than four identical coupons per household per day, and one per item.
6. At the till, hand over coupons after your items are scanned, and scan the Walmart app QR code to link Walmart Cash offers.
7. Check your receipt before leaving. If a coupon didn't come off, go back to the till or customer service straight away.
8. Check your Walmart Cash balance after the order is fulfilled.

Using coupons at self-checkout

Many Walmart self-checkouts have a coupon option on screen. Scan all your items first, then choose the coupon option and scan or insert each coupon as prompted. If the machine won't accept a coupon, or a coupon needs checking, the attendant will usually need to approve it. If you have a lot of coupons, a staffed till is often quicker and avoids repeated "help needed" alerts.

Worked examples: how much can you save?

These are illustrative figures; real coupon values and prices vary by store and week.

Example 1: a normal weekly shop

• Laundry detergent at $12.97 with a $2 paper coupon: pay $10.97.
• Two boxes of cereal at $4.48 each with two $1 coupons: pay $6.96.
• Toothpaste at $3.97 with a $1 printable coupon: pay $2.97.
• A $1.50 Walmart Cash offer claimed in the app on coffee at $8.98.

At the till you save $5 in paper coupons. After fulfilment, $1.50 Walmart Cash lands in your account for next time. Total value: $6.50.

Example 2: when overage doesn't help

A razor on clearance costs $2.50 and you have a $3 coupon. Walmart applies the coupon only up to the item price, so the razor is free but the extra 50 cents is lost. It still makes sense if you need the razor, but not as a way to "earn" money.

Example 3: the four-coupon limit

You have six identical $0.75 coupons for yogurt and want six pots. You can use four today (saving $3) and the other two on another day, as long as they're still in date.

Why Walmart rejects coupons

Most refused coupons fail for one of these reasons:

• It's digital. Walmart won't scan a coupon from your phone.
• It doesn't match. The size, variety or quantity is different from what the coupon names.
• It's expired or not yet valid.
• It won't scan, often because a printable coupon is blurry, resized or photocopied.
• It fails validation against the Positive Offer File, which can happen with counterfeit or withdrawn coupons.
• It's the wrong kind: a competitor's store coupon, a percentage-off BOGO, or a UPC-A-only barcode.
• You've hit a limit: more than four identical coupons in a day, or two coupons on one item.

What to say if a cashier refuses a coupon

Cashiers see a lot of coupons and are trained to be careful. If yours is refused, try this:

1. Ask politely why it was refused. Often it's a size or variety mismatch you can fix by swapping the product.
2. If you believe it's valid, point to the relevant line in Walmart's published coupon policy.
3. Ask for a manager or customer service lead, who has the final say.
4. If it still isn't accepted, decide whether you still want the item at full price, or put it back.

Arguing at the till rarely helps. A calm request for a manager, with the policy on your phone, resolves most genuine disputes.

Is Walmart+ worth it for saving money?

Walmart+ isn't a coupon programme, but it can cut costs for regular shoppers. According to the Walmart+ page, at the time of writing it costs $98 a year (a monthly plan is also available), with a 30-day trial for $1. Qualifying government assistance recipients and college students can get Walmart+ Assist at 50% off, shown as $49 a year.

• Free delivery on grocery orders over $35.
• Free next-day and two-day shipping from Walmart.com with no order minimum.
• 10 cents a gallon off fuel at participating Walmart, Murphy, Exxon, Mobil and CITGO stations.
• A choice of streaming service (Paramount+ Essential or Peacock Premium with ads).

As a rough guide, if you'd otherwise pay for grocery delivery several times a month, or you fill up at participating stations often, the $98 fee can pay for itself. If you shop in person once a week and usually fill up elsewhere, it may not.

Tips for couponing at Walmart

• Print internet coupons clearly at full size, and never photocopy them.
• Keep coupons organised by aisle or category so matching is quick.
• Match each coupon to the exact product, size and variety it names.
• Pair coupons with Rollback and clearance prices for the lowest final cost.
• Claim Walmart Cash offers before you shop, and scan the QR code at the till every time.
• Stay under four identical coupons per day per household.
• Keep a copy of the coupon policy on your phone in case of disagreements.
• Check your receipt and Walmart Cash balance after every trip.
