Michaels relaunched its loyalty programme on 1 March 2026, moving existing members automatically into three tiers. According to the Michaels announcement:

Platinum members also get early access to new products and events. Michaels credit cardholders get their own perks, including a 30% everyday coupon, 10% extra off custom framing, 20% off their first purchase and periodic free shipping, with no annual spend requirement.

How rewards are earned

The Michaels Rewards page says tier status is based on qualifying spend over the past 12 months and is updated monthly. Rewards aren't earned on taxes, gift cards, extended warranties, shipping fees or MakerPlace third-party items. There is a cap of $150 in rewards per day and a maximum of 9% per transaction. At the time of writing, new members were also offered $5 in rewards when spending $15 or more, with that offer shown as valid until 3 October 2026.

Should you chase a higher tier?

Joining the free Red tier is worth it for almost anyone, because your account is also how you get birthday offers and how teacher and military discounts are applied. Chasing Gold or Platinum is different. Spending an extra $100 to reach $300 earns you 3% more back on future spending, which only pays off if you'd have spent that money anyway. Worked example: is Gold worth reaching?

Say you spend about $400 a year at Michaels. At the Red rate of 3%, that earns roughly $12 in rewards. At the Gold rate of 6%, the same spending would earn roughly $24, plus a bigger birthday discount and a 20% everyday coupon. If you're already close to $300 in a year, Gold happens naturally and is a nice bonus. If you spend $150 a year, adding another $150 of supplies you don't need to reach Gold is a poor trade: you'd spend $150 to gain a few extra dollars of rewards.

What about Canada?

Michaels said it planned to bring the tiered structure to Canada the month after the US launch. Canadian coupon terms, exclusions and prices can differ, so Canadian shoppers should check the Canadian site's policies rather than relying on US figures.

Michaels teacher and military discounts

Two ongoing 15% discounts are easy to miss:

• Teacher discount: 15% off your entire purchase, including sale items, once you complete educator verification through your Michaels Rewards account. In store, bring valid educator ID.
• Military discount: 15% off your entire purchase, including sale items, for active military, veterans and immediate family members, again verified through Michaels Rewards. In store, bring valid military ID.

Both are limited to one discount per product and one per day in store, and they share many of the same exclusions as coupons, including clearance, custom framing, gift cards and craft machines. Michaels' pages don't clearly say whether they combine with other coupons on the same item, so assume the till applies whichever single discount is allowed per product and compare before you pay. Does Michaels price match?

Yes, but online and in-store purchases follow different rules.

The eligible online retailers listed in the policy are Athome.com, Hobbylobby.com, Homedepot.com, Kohls.com, Lowes.com, Officedepot.com, Popshelf.com, Staples.com, Target.com and Walmart.com. Online matches exclude technology products, clearance, limited-time offers, coupon offers, membership pricing and third-party sellers, and there are no rain checks for out-of-stock competitor items.

How to use a Michaels coupon: step by step

Online at Michaels.com

1. Sign in to your Michaels Rewards account so your tier perks and discounts load.
2. Add items to your basket and check which are regular price and which are on sale.
3. At checkout, enter your coupon code or select an available offer from your account.
4. Check the order summary shows the discount against the item you expected.
5. Note the order date, so you can watch the price for 7 days in case the price guarantee applies.

In a Michaels store

1. Open the Michaels app and find your coupons before you get to the till.

Coupon values change every week, so the figures here are illustrative. Imagine your basket contains a $60 regular-price easel and ten regular-price paint tubes at $4 each ($40), for $100 in total. You have two coupons in the app: 40% off one regular-price item, and 20% off your entire purchase.

• Single-item coupon on the easel: 40% × $60 = $24 off.
• Entire-purchase coupon on everything: 20% × $100 = $20 off.
• Both, if allowed that day: because only one coupon can go on each product, the best split is 40% on the easel ($24) and 20% on the paints ($8), for $32 off, leaving $68 to pay.

As a Gold member earning 6% back, you'd also earn about $4.08 in rewards on the $68 you pay (taxes aren't included). As a Red member at 3%, that would be about $2.04. The lesson: always put the biggest single-item coupon on your most expensive eligible item, and check the final total before paying.

Common mistakes with Michaels coupons

• Expecting a paper coupon at the till. Stores don't issue them, so get them on your phone first.
• Using a single-item coupon on a cheap item. A 40% coupon on a $5 item saves $2. On a $60 item it saves $24.
• Forgetting "regular price". Many coupons don't apply to sale items, so a coupon may do nothing on a discounted product.

Without one, you'll need photo ID, and Michaels will try to find your purchase through your Rewards account; if it can't, the refund is issued on a Store Return Card at the item's lowest selling price in the previous 90 days. The return policy doesn't spell out how coupon discounts are handled, but as with most retailers, expect to be refunded the amount you actually paid for the item after discounts, not its full ticket price.
