Sophos Home Guide: Free vs Premium and How to Pay Less

Sophos Home is the household antivirus from Sophos, a well-known business cybersecurity company. New users no longer get a permanent free plan: you get a 30-day trial covering up to three computers, after which Sophos Home Premium protects up to 10 Windows and Mac computers from one web dashboard for an annual subscription.

This guide explains what happened to Sophos Home Free, what Premium includes on Windows and Mac, how much it costs, how renewal works, and the sensible ways to pay less. Details are correct at the time of writing (September 2026), but prices and features can change, so always check the official site before you buy.

What is Sophos Home?

Sophos Home is antivirus and web security software for home computers. It is built on technology Sophos sells to organisations, but packaged so one person can manage every family computer from a single web dashboard. You install a small app on each Windows PC or Mac, and then control settings, run scans and see alerts from any browser.

That remote management is the main thing that sets it apart. If you look after your parents' laptop or your children's computers, you can check whether they are protected, run a scan or change a web filter without being in the same room.

Is Sophos Home still free?

Not for new users. Sophos changed its Sophos Home Free option into a 30-day free trial of Sophos Home Premium (Sophos Home Help). Anyone signing up today gets a trial, not a permanent free plan.

There is one exception. Free accounts created before 11 November 2021 keep their permanent Free licence, which protects up to three Windows or Mac devices with the original free feature set. If you have had an old free account for years, it may still be working, but you cannot open a new one. If you close that old account, you will not get it back.

How the Sophos Home free trial works

The trial lasts 30 days, covers up to three computers and includes all Premium features (Sophos Home General FAQ). The site advertises it with no credit card required, so the trial cannot roll into a paid plan by accident.

When the trial ends, protection stops. Sophos says previously protected devices appear greyed out in the dashboard and you cannot change settings until you buy a subscription. That is important: an expired trial leaves your computer unprotected by Sophos, so either buy Premium or make sure another antivirus, such as the one built into Windows, is switched back on.

What does Sophos Home Premium include?

According to the Sophos Home website, Premium secures up to 10 Windows and Mac computers, plus iOS and Android phones and tablets through a separate mobile app. The main features it lists are:

• Malware scan and clean to find and remove threats that are already on a computer.
• AI threat detection aimed at new and unknown malware.
• Ransomware security that watches for suspicious encryption of your files.
• Web protection that blocks malicious and phishing websites.

• Parental web filtering by website category.
• Remote security management of every device from one web dashboard.
• Premium support by live chat and email.

Premium support hours

Live chat and email support is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm US Eastern time, with a chatbot and knowledge base around the clock. For UK users, that works out as roughly 2pm to midnight on weekdays, so plan any support queries for the afternoon or evening.

Does Sophos Home work the same on Windows and Mac?

Mostly, but not completely. Sophos is upfront that protection differs slightly because of operating system limits. According to its features page, three features are Windows only.

If your household is mostly Macs, you are paying the same price for a slightly smaller feature set. That does not make it a bad choice, but it is worth knowing before you commit to a multi-year plan.

Sophos Home system requirements

Check your computers meet the official system requirements before you buy. At the time of writing, Sophos lists:

• Windows: Windows 11, or 64-bit Windows 10 (which Sophos describes as being in a "soft retirement" phase). ARM-based Windows computers are not supported.
• Mac: recent macOS versions from Ventura (macOS 13) onwards. Beta versions of macOS are not supported.
• Memory: at least 4GB of RAM, with 8GB recommended on Mac.
• Storage: about 4GB of disk space, plus 3GB more for the ransomware protection module. An SSD is strongly recommended.
• Processor: at least two cores on Windows.

Sophos notes that entry-level machines may see occasional slowdowns during demanding tasks. If you have an older, low-spec laptop, the free trial is the best way to find out whether it copes.

Phones, tablets and Linux

Mobile devices are protected by a separate app, Sophos Intercept X for Mobile. Sophos says these devices will not appear in your Sophos Home dashboard because they use a different product. Linux is not supported at all.

How much does Sophos Home cost?

Sophos sells Premium as a single plan on one, two or three-year terms. In its help centre, Sophos gives the list price (MSRP) of an annual Premium subscription as $59.99 for up to 10 devices, while noting that promotional pricing varies. The website regularly advertises percentage savings on top, and UK buyers see local pricing at checkout.

Independent reviewers have reported noticeably lower promotional prices. For example, All About Cookies listed US prices of $44.99 a year for a one-year plan, $37.49 a year on two years and $34.99 a year on three years in October 2025. Treat these as examples only: prices change with promotions and currency, so check the live price before you pay.

In this example, the three-year plan saves $30 compared with buying a discounted year three times, and $75 compared with paying list price each year. But the saving only counts if you keep using Sophos for all three years. If you might switch in 12 months, the one-year plan is the safer bet.

How to pay less for Sophos Home Premium: step by step

1. Start with the free trial. Thirty days is enough time to install it on your main computers and see whether you like the dashboard. There is no card needed, so there is nothing to cancel.
2. Count your computers. Premium covers up to 10. If you only have one or two, weigh up whether the dashboard and filtering are worth paying for.
3. Compare one, two and three-year terms. Longer terms usually work out cheaper per year, but only if you are confident you will keep using it.

How does Sophos Home renewal work?

Auto-renewal is on by default so your protection does not lapse. You can check its status by signing in to the Sophos Home dashboard and going to My Account, then Subscriptions. If it says "Renews", auto-renewal is on. If it says "Expires", it is off.

To turn auto-renewal off, use the subscription management email from cleverbridge. Those links expire after 30 days, but you can request a new one through cleverbridge's purchase lookup tool. Sophos also notes that you cannot extend a subscription beyond three years in total, and you cannot convert a home subscription into a business one.

Who is Sophos Home best for?

The 10-computer allowance is the big selling point. A family with a couple of laptops, a desktop and the children's computers can cover everything on one subscription and see it all in one place. It suits:

• anyone who looks after a relative's computer remotely;
• parents who want simple category-based web filtering;
• people who want ransomware protection and extra web protection on top of built-in tools.

It is a less obvious fit if you only have one Windows PC and want the bare minimum, because Windows already includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus. It is also worth remembering that Mac users get a slightly smaller feature set, and ARM-based Windows laptops are not supported at all.

Common mistakes that cost people money

• Buying a multi-year plan before trying it. The trial exists for a reason, so use it first.
• Forgetting about auto-renewal. Rolling into another year without comparing prices can mean paying more than a new-customer promotion.
• Paying for more cover than you need. A 10-computer plan costs the same whether you protect two machines or ten.
• Running two antivirus products at once. Sophos recommends removing other antivirus software before installing, as competing products can conflict.

How to install Sophos Home and add more computers

Setting up takes about ten minutes per computer. The steps are similar on Windows and Mac, based on the Sophos installation guide:

1. Remove other antivirus software first. Sophos recommends uninstalling third-party antivirus products to avoid conflicts. Temporarily turning off VPNs and network restrictions during installation can also help.
2. Create your account and download the installer from the Sophos Home website.
3. Run the installer. On a Mac you will be asked for your Mac administrator password, not your Sophos password.
4. Grant permissions on Mac. Allow the Sophos system extensions when prompted, then give Sophos components Full Disk Access in System Settings. Without these, protection is incomplete.
5. Add further computers from the dashboard. Sign in to the Sophos Home dashboard on the next computer and use the Add Device option rather than downloading a fresh installer from the homepage.

Sophos Home vs the free antivirus built into Windows

Every Windows 10 and Windows 11 computer comes with Microsoft Defender Antivirus switched on unless another antivirus replaces it. For many people with a single PC, that built-in protection plus careful browsing is enough. So what does Sophos Home Premium add?

• One dashboard for many computers, including Macs, so you can see the whole household's status at a glance.
• Remote management, which is useful if you support family members who live elsewhere.
